The Metabolic Reset: Why Your Body Stores Fat

Most people are taught that fat loss is simply about eating less and exercising more. But in

practice, I consistently see something different. Two people can follow similar diets and

workouts—and both of them get completely different results. The reason is simple: fat loss is not just about calories, it’s about metabolic signaling. Our body is constantly receiving signals that tell it to either burn energy or store it. When the wrong signals dominate, our body shifts into fat-storing mode—even when we're doing everything right.

For example, a balanced, protein-rich meal signals your body to build muscle and burn energy (protein is the most metabolically strong compared to the other two macronutrients fat and carbohydrates, meaning our body burns the most calories digesting, breaking down and using protein in the body). However, if we feed our body the same amount of calories in simple carbohydrate foods like donuts and candies, it causes repeated blood sugar spikes. Because these types of carbohydrate foods make the body release the hormone insulin to quickly move these blood sugars into your cells fast, these cells now have all the energy they need and so the excess gets stored as body fat for future use. Timing of food and portions all matter as metabolic signals. Likewise, consistent and good quality sleep with well-managed stress promote efficient fat burning throughout the day because trusts the world, whereas chronic stress with elevated cortisol encourage the body to conserve energy and store fat because it feels there's a 'war' on the way. With a human body being in a constant 'fight or flight' essentially holds on to calories like there could be a famine tomorrow. Mindful, present eating without distractions, gives healthy metabolic signaling to digest food thoroughly and well.

My Approach: Root Cause, Not Restriction

As a functional nutrition practitioner, my work focuses on identifying why the body is receiving fat-storing signals in the first place. Through lab-based testing, personalized nutrition, individualized workout routines and movement focuses, and nervous system regulation, I use what I call a 3-dimensional metabolic approach: Nutrition, Movement, and Nervous System balance. These are also my '3 doctors' in managing dis-ease. Metabolism is not controlled by one system—it’s the integration of all three.

3 Hidden Reasons Your Body Stores Fat

We are more than calories-in, calories-out. Quality in our nutrition and timing of specific

nutrients and portion of our intake all matter in the quest for our body to work for us in

burning fat, building muscle and thriving throughout our day with natural energy. Here

are three examples.

1. Blood Sugar Instability

Skipping meals, under-eating, or relying on quick carbs (and consuming too much in one sitting) creates repeated insulin spikes and crashes. Over time, this signals the body to store energy rather than burn it. Elevated insulin is one of the strongest fat-storage signals in the body. I recently worked with a client who prided herself in consuming 100% healthy and only organic food. However, she was still struggling with her fat loss goals. We adjusted her nutritional lifestyle to focus on increasing her protein intake, managed her carbohydrate portions and actually added an additional snack to her day and her metabolism finally began to respond favorably for her.

2. Chronic Stress & Nervous System Dysregulation

Constant stress, poor sleep, and rushed eating elevate cortisol and impair digestion. When the body perceives stress, it shifts into survival mode—prioritizing energy storage, especially around the midsection, instead of fat loss.

3. Poor Gut Health & Nutrient Absorption Many people are eating well but not absorbing nutrients effectively due to microbiome imbalance, low stomach acid, or gut inflammation. This leads to fatigue, deficiencies, and a slowed metabolism—signaling the body to conserve energy rather than expend it. The GI microbiome test is one of the most popular tests I order for my patients, as it helps us to clearly identify these problems so we know exactly how to begin improving the gut with my 4R Gut Repair Protocol.

Where Sulforaphane Changes the Signal

This is where targeted nutritional compounds become powerful. Phytochemicals are each plant's 'superpowers' that serve unique functions, such as protection from pests and harsh weather. When we consume plants with phytochemicals, our body takes on many health benefits. Sulforaphane, a phytochemical found in broccoli microgreens, activates within our body a key cellular pathway called NRF2 (nerve growth factor), which helps enhance our body's own detoxification powers, lower inflammation, and improve our metabolic efficiency. When this pathway is activated, the body becomes more effective at reducing oxidative stress and improving cellular signaling. Practically, this connects directly to the three root causes above. Supporting insulin sensitivity helps stabilize blood sugar and reduce fat storage signals. Reducing inflammation helps calm the stress response and shift the body out of survival mode. Improving our gut environment and detox pathways supports nutrient absorption and metabolic function.

Why This Matters in Real Life

Most people are not consuming enough cruciferous vegetables daily to reach meaningful levels phytochemicals like sulforaphane. This is where concentrated sources become useful. As a functional nutritonal practitioner, I'm always finding practical and easy ways for people to boost their nutrient intake in the foods they're already eating. One unique formula that I use is Ederra’s EMPOWR+. Just 1 scoop each morning with a shot of water

provides a standardized dose of broccoli microgreens—where 1 scoop is equivalent to

consuming over 1 pound of broccoli! For me, having had 5 bowel resection surgeries in the past due to Crohn's complication, it's difficult for me to even eat half a pound of lightly cooked broccoli each day, let alone the time it takes to chew it down well. EMPOWR+ allows me and users worldwide consistent support of detox pathways, inflammation control, and metabolic signaling without relying on unrealistic food intake alone.

In my practice, I work with many women whose bodies are not efficiently metabolizing and

clearing stored estrogens, often contributing to symptoms like stubborn fat, bloating, and

hormonal imbalance. Supporting these detox pathways with compounds like sulforaphane helps perimenopausal bodies more effectively process and eliminate excess estrogen, improving overall hormonal and metabolic balance.

From My Research to Practice

My doctoral research focused on how nutrition and lifestyle interventions can significantly

influence hormonal and metabolic balance before pharmaceutical intervention is needed, solely through sound, balanced nutrition with a well-rounded progressive fitness regimen. That principle guides my work today. Of course, when our body is dealing with an acute injury, medications can be life-saving—but we first ask: what signals is the body responding to, and how do we correct them with food being our first medicine?

Large clinical trials have shown that targeted nutrition and lifestyle interventions can improve metabolic health outcomes by up to ~50–60% in certain populations, reinforcing that the body has a powerful capacity to rebalance when given the right inputs. My approach is this: medication may have its place, but lasting results come from understanding your body’s unique nutritional needs, fulfilling any deficiency causing imbalance in the first place and maintaining consistency with movement and lifestyle habits.

The Metabolic Reset

A true reset is not about restriction—it’s about restoring the right signals. This includes

stabilizing blood sugar through balanced meals and protein intake, regulating the nervous

system through sleep and stress management, restoring gut function through microbiome and digestion support, and reinforcing these systems with targeted compounds like sulforaphane.

Final Thought

Your body is not broken. It is responding exactly as it was designed to—based on the signals it receives. When those signals shift, energy improves, metabolism responds, and fat loss becomes sustainable.
